The Michigan Gateway Community Foundation received a grant from the Kresge Foundation in 2013 with the purpose to be the encouragement for students to attend college. Our YAC partnered with Lake Michigan College (LMC) to encourage 8th grade students from the communities we serve to start thinking about going to college. The first week of March, 2013 we bused selected 8th grade students to the LMC campus to attend workshops so students know college can be in their future. The 8th graders heard from panels of current college students, professors and professionals, played games and had lunch. Our YAC thinks it is important to get younger students excited about going to college. They believe an event like this will start a new trend of college going students, and will re apply in 2014 to provide the program once again.
